ADHD Support Groups
So you’ve been told that you are an ADHDer or you suspect that you are. After a lifetime of being under the assumption that ADHD was just for hyperactive won’t-sit-in-a-chair kids, you never thought the difficulties in your life would fall under the umbrella of neurodivergence. Maybe you had some quirks or things that made work and daily tasks more challenging, but you never considered it to be ADHD. But now that you are learning more about ADHD, you’re realizing the true impact it’s had on your adult life.
At our San Francisco, CA-based therapy practice, we specialize in helping ADHDer’s get to know their brains. We value the benefit of learning skills and tools in group therapy in addition to the deeply feeling work of connection that happens as we build community amongst group members. Our aim is for these groups to be a supportive, collaborative space for adults to find community concerning their neurodivergence. It may be important on your journey towards learning more about your ADHD to access individual therapy, couple’s therapy, or a referral for a medication evaluation which our therapists will provide when needed.
Working in group therapy is not only impactful in learning new skills to manage the struggles that come with living in a neurotypical world but also in finding common experiences with others. Each group creates a unique bond through learning about their ADHD struggles, strengths, and new ways to access support. Currently, we have three options for groups; 3-week Summer Workshops, Ongoing ADHD Skills and Support Groups, and Thriving Together, a group for perfectionism, anxiety and ADHD.
To get started, please schedule a 30-minute intake session with Ceci Walken, our group therapy lead.
ADHD Support Groups
In our Three-week ADHD workshops, we will discuss making peace with the diagnosis and what this means for you and your life. We will talk about options for help, including medication and therapy, how to build a healthy lifestyle, exercise routines, diets, and sleep schedules, all from a neurodivergent affirming lens. Meaning that we will help you do these things in a way that works for your unique brain. We will also talk about how you and your partner can readjust your family life to make space for everyone’s needs and challenges.
The ADHD Skills and Support Group will support people and help build skills and create goals around several areas that ADHDer’s struggle with. Our group draws from Dr. Mary Solanto, a leader in the field of research and treatment of ADHD. We will work on building tools to manage to hold attention to tasks, active listening, follow-through, time awareness, distraction, forgetfulness, and other difficulties of inattention. We will also focus on learning emotion regulation with mindfulness, meditation, and distress tolerance skills. Throughout the group, we are building community and increasing self-compassion as group members hear more about their own shared experiences in the stories of those around them.
After attending one of our ADHD groups, we hope that you walk away feeling empowered, educated, and connected to yourself and others in the ADHD community. You will become more resourceful, skillful, and resilient when it comes to the struggles that come with ADHD, and have a better understanding of your strengths as well, which will translate to feeling more confident in both your personal and professional lives.
